Abstract
This thesis examines the accounts of the Twelve's failures as they are provided in the Gospel of Mark and seeks to classify these failures into coherent categories. Chapter 1 offers grounds for studying these accounts of failure in this manner and addresses differences between this thesis and other studies which attempt to explain the reasons why Mark often portrayed the Twelve in a negative way.
Chapter 2 contains a survey of previous scholarly efforts which have focused primarily on understanding the Markan portrayal of the Twelve.
Chapter 3 lists the 25 Markan passages included in this study, chronicling and analyzing the failure present in them.
Chapter 4 offers conclusions based primarily on chapter 3. Most of the Markan episodes of the Twelve's failure fit into at least one of the three chosen classifications.
