dc.description.abstractThis dissertation introduces seven selected sacred choral works, each composed by a different Korean composer, along with a historical survey of Korean sacred choral music and a guide to Korean diction. Chapter 1 states the purpose of the study and defines the terms, limitations, and basic assumptions of the research. The chapter also discusses related literature, basic principles about dealing with the Korean language in the study, and research procedures. Chapter 2 describes the historical development of sacred choral music in Korea, focusing on important composers and their works, prominent choirs, and major church music organizations. Several distinctive types of recent compositional approaches are identified and discussed, along with the contribution of church music publishers. Chapter 3 addresses Korean diction for singers. It begins with a brief introduction to the Korean alphabet, Hangeul, and explains pronunciation of the Korean vowels and consonants, pointing out problems of the official Romanization, system and presenting an IPA-based transcription system developed by the author. Several notable principles of Korean pronunciation are also described. Chapter 4, the main body of this research, examines the selected choral works in succession. Each discussion includes introductory information about the piece, a brief biographical sketch of the composer, a textual discussion including a phonetic transcription and English translation of the text, a musical analysis based on Julius Herford's method of phrase analysis, and performance suggestions for the work. Chapter 5 presents a summary of the information addressed in the preceding chapters. Suggestions for additional research are included for those who wish to make a further study of Korean sacred choral music. The appendixes include the official document of the Romanization of Korean, lists of choral works by selected composers, a glossary of Korean terms, a list of Korean music publishers, and musical scores of the selected sacred choral works.en_US
