| dc.description.abstract | This dissertation analyzes the integration of apologetics and evangelism in the ministry of Reuben Archer Torrey (1856-1928). Chapter 1 introduces Torrey's ministry through selections of his using apologetics in evangelistic encounters. Previous Torrey research is referenced to establish the scholarly framework for this dissertation. The broader question of the relationship between apologetics and evangelism is also addressed as an important related theme.
Chapter 2 provides a biography of Torrey. Special attention is given to his conversion, his academic studies, his pastoral ministry, his Christian education work, his crusade ministry, and his publications.
Chapter 3 presents the theological and philosophical factors that distinctively helped to shape Torrey's apologetics-based approach to evangelism. Particular attention is given to the nature and influence of Scottish Common Sense Realism. The chapter also focuses on Torrey's doctrinal commitments undergirding his Great Commission ministry, including revelation, theology proper, Christology, pneumatology, anthropology, and soteriology.
Chapter 4 examines in-depth selected sermons and writings of Torrey that illustrate his apologetics-based evangelism. His philosophy of preaching is analyzed, then individual messages and publications are examined with respect to doctrine and application.
Chapter 5 evaluates Torrey's integration of apologetics and evangelism for the purpose of articulating what precise relationship should exist between the two disciplines. Analysis focuses upon the importance of both apologetic knowledge and evangelistic contextualization, with Torrey presented as the model historical example. The nature of the gospel message itself, the responses of belief and unbelief, and the role and value of apologetics are detailed. Contemporary application with suggested practical implications close the chapter.
Chapter 6 concludes the dissertation with final thoughts on R. A. Torrey and how further study in this area might be conducted. | en_US |
