Description
The meeting, in the basement of the Broad Street Methodist Church in Richmond, Virginia on May 11, 1888 was held for the purpose of organizing a national woman’s mission organization as auxiliary to the Southern Baptist Convention. The original name of the organization as defined in its constitution presented May 18, 1888 was Executive Committee of the Woman’s Mission Societies (Auxiliary to the Southern Baptist Convention). By 1890 the name had changed to Woman’s Missionary Union, auxiliary to the Southern Baptist Convention. See Encyclopedia of Southern Baptists, 1958, v.2.
