| dc.description | P. Haldeman 1 is a Greek papyrus fragment that consists of 17 partial lines of a land lease contract between a woman named Herois (the landowner) and a lessee. As indicated by the mention of a regnal year (4, 14, or 24) of ‘Marcus Aurelius’ in line 15 and by comparisons of the handwriting, the lease likely dates from AD 215/216–234/235. The papyrus probably originates from the Arsinoite nome in Egypt, where many similar land leases have survived (e.g., P.Fam. Tebt. 47; P.Tebt. II 377). In this lease agreement, Herois covers the public dues associated with the execution of the payment (lines 7–8). The tenant agrees to properly maintain the land and return it in a good condition to the landowner at the conclusion of the rental period (lines 1–5, 8–12). The minimally literate lessee signs with his distinct and belabored handwriting in lines 13–14.
